Free Breakfast Youth Session: What Will People Say? - Main Musallah Nura Maznavi What will people say? Most of us can hear that childhood whisper in the back of our minds well into adulthood. How do you even begin to broach issues of love or relationships with family members who may see you as a child or who may not have a shared language or tradition of exploring these issues together? What do you need to know to show up fully as a romantic and marital partner? As a family and community member? In this session, we'll have a conversation about embracing the complexities of yourself, your family, your faith, and community in the search for love. Parent Session: “It Takes a Village” - South Conference Room Br. Noorgul Dada & Sr. Sumaya Hamadmad Are you seeking some fantastic support for the most important job in the world—parenting our youth? Read on! In today's session, we will learn how to lean on each other. Who is best to understand what you're going through, except someone who is also going through it. Let's join forces. Parent Session: A Window on Love, American Muslim Style - Main Musallah Nura Maznavi Dating, courtship, love and relationships - these are not topics that are easy to broach within our families, but are real life and important issues facing our communities and children. How do we start these conversations in a respectful and compassionate way? In this session, we'll have a conversation about the evolving and complex nature of Muslim dating/courtship -- we'll touch on lessons learned from from collecting love stories for both of our books and a frank discussion about how to address these issues as they relate to your family. Girls Session: Spill The Tea - South Conference Room Sr. Sumaya Hamadmad & Sr. Michelle Marie Let’s set the scene. Rumors are spreading about things you’ve never heard of before. You want clarity. Yet, you just aren’t comfortable asking your parents. Wait, may be you will ask. After spending a little over a minute thinking of a way to phrase your question, you hesitate to follow through because you fear that it’s, dramatic music, a “stupid question.” We’ve all been there, and I’m sure some of you reading this might also have a few questions that you don’t want to ask in front of all your family and friends. It’s time to get serious. Let’s spill the tea. Join us with a couple of mentors you can trust. No parents are permitted. (Sessions will be split by gender. Dhuhr Prayer Main Session From Tehran Street Style to the War on Terror - Main Musallah Hoda Ketabi A Conversation on Identity, Feminism, Orientalism, White Supremacy, and Empire through Fashion / Besides being used as a measure of one's clout, fashion is a powerful means of communication, oppression, and resistance. Between Kanye West's 'refugee camp' collection and miniskirts being used as a sign of Afghanistan's modernization, the way we chose to present our bodies for public consumption is more powerful than might meet the eye. Starting with images of illegal fashion she documented in her book Tehran Street Style, Hoda Katebi will guide participants through an engaging conversation exploring the politics of fashion and what it reveals about contemporary structures of violence -- and modes of resistance. Young Youth & Parent Session Writing the Muslim-American Experience- Basement Sr. Asma Mobin-Uddin In this session youth will analyze why the author chose to begin writing books, although she was a pediatrician. What is the Muslim-American Experience, and why is that so important to share in print and writing? With a presentation by Sr Asma the writer of award winning books like, “The Best Eid Ever” and “My Name is Bilal” our youth will explore a her choice in authorship and why it's so important. Main Session Civic and Social Engagement: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle - Main Musallah Moderator: Ridah Khan Panelist: Ilhan Dahir, Usjid Hameed, Shafiq Luden, Bayan Shalash, Omar Saqr We will discuss what is missing from our communities civil and social engagement. With our great lineup on this panel we will go in depth about, the civil and social engagement issues that our community is facing, how we tackled these issues, what initiatives come out of it, and lastly how can and should be better allies with communities on the outside. Young Youth Session (8+) Songwriting Workshop - Basement Sr. Michelle Marie Introduction to songwriting will provide participants with a brief background in the art and craft of songwriting. Participants will review the elements of songwriting: lyrics, rhythm, melody, and song structure. Participants will work on an original song in group creative writing exercises.
