Poetry Slam

The Youth Poetry Slam will be taking place from 3-4 pm on Saturday, March 19th. Enjoy a few excerpts from our performers for a taste of what's to come!

"They intertwine us with poverty,
and use terrorism to explain us,
they use our name in vain
not fully understanding Abdi only means slave,
followed usually by Allah's name"
-Deeq Ali
"I know
you will never know
what it feels like to completely belong anywhere wandering continuously through a gray area between two extremes of black and white where you are too foreign for the Americans and too American for your own.."
-Habiba Barre
"I am writing to you from
the broken wings of wind
where streets don’t know where to begin
and maps fail to guide you."
-Sara Abou Rashed
"You said if you could reach the sky
you'd never come back down,
but wouldn't that be too easy?
A life with no pain but
what would there be to gain?"
-Amaal Ahmed
"I believe that life is likened to a piece of fine crystal
as it can be beautiful without comparision,
Or in a moment's notice,
it can be shattered beyond repair..."
-Saeema Syed
"Every time I'm deep in contemplation,
I have an aspiration to be the inspiration
to those who'll change the whole globe and its nations."
-Mohamed Warsame
"Smiling despite the pain,
smiling despite the war,
smiling to help those who cant anymore."
-Yara Edor
"If all men were created equal,
then these are acts of treason,
but with these laws of lies
we've become desensitized..."
-Sarra Abdurahim
